*Probably a Hymypoika-patsas ("Smiling Boy statue"). Those and Hymytyttö-patsas ("Smiling Girl statue") are given to students for being especially nice to other students. Boy statues have been given out to students since 1954, girl statues since 1955 and genderneutral Hymy-patsas ("Smile-statue") since 2022. Winners are chosen by the classmates.
** "taideaineet" or "art subjects" is a collective term for the school subjects of arts, music, handcrafts, physical education and home economics - anything where you develop a skill rather than just learn facts, like in "tietoaineet", "knowledge subjects".
*** Obligatory Swedish studies have been a topic of political debate ever since I can remember. Those opposing it argue that the reason we still have obligatory Swedish studies is rooted in the Swedes oppressing us, treating us like second class citizens for being Finns. Swedish was the only official language on government forms, in schools, in everything, and Finnish was the language of the peasants. Now we have two official languages and pretty much everything is in both languages (teaching is in Finnish, Swedish-speakers have their own schools). Those supporting it argue that we have a Swedish-speaking minority of Finns (5,2% of the population), the country has two official languages and everyone should know both and that it's always a positive thing to learn languages.
**** All education is free, even college/university, but that means the competition to get in is ruthless.
